5 Minutes with – KING PARROT
Where & When did most of the bands members meet each other originally?
We’re all from the Melbourne music scene and new each other from other bands and mutual friends and what not. We have all been friends for some time before King Parrot started. We all recognized each other as musicians that wanted to take things to another level in terms of touring and pushing a band to another level and have all worked towards doing that with King Parrot as the vehicle
What was the first tune(s) you learned or put together as a band?
That’s probably 6-7 years ago now, but it might have been ‘Sun in the Sea’ or ‘No Coincidence’ from the first record, they were two of our earliest tunes.
Which famous musicians “or’ not so famous people do you admire? Why?
Famous or not, I admire anyone that’s willing to throw caution to the wind, follow their dreams and go against the grain of societies pressures to do what they truly want to do with their lives. Because I work in music industry I find I’m constantly inspired by other people I work with and share the stage with.
Have you ever been or performed in Albury or Wodonga before?, Also, is there anything you look forward doing or checking out whilst in the area?
We’ve played in the area a couple of times before, and it’s always been a real treat. The fans of heavy music in the area are always super supportive and that’s what makes it so rewarding for us to come back. Unfortunately when touring we don’t get much opportunity to check anything out, but it’s all about the people for us.
What has been the coolest venue you performed in?
We’ve played in so many great venues all around the world, we’ve played at The Fillmore in San Francisco, and one of my favourites was The Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles. We’ve played some awesome places in Europe too. We also recently toured Japan for the first time and some of the venues there are amazing and really well equipped with awesome high end audio and lighting equipment.
Which musicians, industry people or venue owners in the scene have you learnt the most from?
As young guy growing up I learnt a lot from hanging around The Tote Hotel in Melbourne. It’s a really rock ‘n’ roll sanctuary and the band booker there at the time Luke Roberts really gave me a great intro to the scene. My good friend Nicole Tadpole who works on 3RRR radio in Melbourne doing the program Respect The Rock has also been someone who has constantly inspired me and had a life-long with heavy music. King parrot has also been affiliated with Housecore Records in the US which is run by Phil Anselmo (Pantera, Down, Superjoint, The Illegals) and his partner Kate. Those guys have an unwaivering commitment to underground music and have been both inspiring and supportive of King Parrot to no end.
What are your fondest musical memories?
Our affiliation with Housecore Records has been one of the best things to happen to King Parrot. Having the opportunity to record and perform with Phil Anselmo has been a massive learning experience and he is someone I looked up to growing up.
I’ve also had the opportunity to perform with Max Cavalera (Sepultura, Soulfly, Killer be Killed, Nailbomb) many times, and he was kind enough to ask me to do vocals on the last Soulfly album where I did guest vocals on the track “Live Life Hard”.
Were you influenced by old records, tapes & Cd’s? Which ones?
Oh yeah! I have a massive collection of vinyl records. I have so much different stuff from old blues and jazz records to the heaviest of heavy obscure metal stuff from all over the world. I’m inspired by everything from The Beatles to Impaled Nazarene!
Places lived, And if & how have they’ve had influence on your song writing?
I’ve lived in the US, UK, and Europe at various stages throughout my life, but when it comes to King Parrot the music and lyrics isn’t so much influenced by places, its not like we write thoughtful reflective music. Its more driven from a place of angst and frustration and occasionally some humour thrown in.
Favourite Cover that the band like to perform?
We recently did a cover of the AC/DC track ‘Nervous Shakedown’, that was heaps of fun.
Where else have you toured? Internationally?
We have toured all around the world many times, North America mostly, but we’ve done Europe alot and all over Asia too. Obviously Australia more than anywhere though!
What do you love about the Child Bite guys that your on tour with?
Child Bite are great friends of ours from Detroit and we have done many tours with them in the US and Canada. They have been hankering to get out to Australia so we finally were album to get them out here. We think our Aussie fans will love them.
And what are the plans for the future? Ie: recording, touring abroad?, Festivals?, Joint projects?
After this Aussie tour we have a US tour booked for May/June and then we will probably do Europe after that.
What are your favourite bands currently on the Oz scene & your local scene?
Some of my favourite bands are Batpiss, Pagan, Disentomb, The Chats, Hits and The Bakelite Age. There’s so many though, Australia’s music scene is thriving right now.
And most of all besides playing & breaking to new audiences & fans what are the other perks of touring regionally?
At the end of the day, for us it’s just great to get out and see all the people that support our band. Our album hit number 21 on the ARIA charts when it was released late last year, so its important we get out and play live to say thanks to all the people that bought it.
Any things at the top of your list to do or undertake on this upcoming regional tour?
We are heading up to Far North Queensland so, I think it’s gonna be great to take the Child Bite guys up there, hopefully we can check out The Whitsundays and some other cool stuff up that way.
Download Festival as a band performing what does it mean to you guys to have another Major festival happening again back here in Oz?
We are really happy to be playing at Download, it’s a massive opportunity to play with some great bands and play on those big festival stages again. We love it and Australia deserves to have a big heavy music festival every year, there’s no doubt about it.
