Country Living “Murray River Swimmin” New Kid on the block DREU.X makes waves in Australia’s Indie Pop Music Scene !!!
Northern Victorian & Echuca Moama region singer songwriter DREU.X buckles up for the release of her debut single “Little Girl” this July (Out Now) The single oozes raw lyrics, Dark atmos and sweet stacks of harmony thanks to her amazing Melbourne producer Benjamin McCarthy who has worked on the likes of (Gordi, G-Flip, Alex the Astronaut)
For this track “Little Girl” was the quickest I had ever written, start to finish. The lyrics rolled off the tip of my tongue like beat poetry. I was unstopabble , Covid had left me broke, feeling small and helpless it felt like my every morning affirmation (my piano) guided my thoughts and in less than an hour I had created & layed out everything that is now my debut release.
I didn’t know it at the time but once I showed Ben, we both said, “Thats the one!”
The track itself strongly explores female empowerement mixed with self doubt, feelings of belittlement & overcoming toxic thoughts. Little Girl might just be the feministic anthem you been searching for.

5 Minutes With DREU.X
What is the story behind your debut track?
I was just sitting at my piano, starring out the window. The first lyrics I sung was “Every heart breaks sometimes.. what the %$.? Happened to mine.” I was thinking damn, better come back to those lyrics and come up with a G rated version. But I was so mad, upset & empty. The original lyric stuck and I continued on with the rest of the song. My emotions stemmed of years of knock downs, set backs and heart break. And the lockdown I was in at the time moulded it into this empowering “when life gives you lemons” anthem. I pitched it to my producer in angst after sending 10+ potential debut releases. He said “Yep. That’s the one!!” Not long after I was in the studio putting down roughs.
Little Girl and I met in perfect time. This record is not just about feeling one emotion but about being present and welcoming all your feelings… just you and that bathroom mirror.
Explain your writing & producing process?
Every song I write starts at the piano. Sitting there and playing some chords and then adding lyrics is how my writing works. I do like to write poems in my journal and then put chords to them, gotta change it up sometimes.
What are your fondest musical memories?
The musical experiences that have moulded me into what I am today is probably all the musical theatre shows I had been apart of. There have been times I have been lost in my artistry not sure which path to take and being apart of theatre shows with great communities would always remind me why I do what I do. Why I love the music.
Places lived, And if they’ve had any influence on your song writing?
I had lived in Echuca all my life apart from when I was 16/17 and moved to Sydney be apart of a music school full time called JMA. Previously I would only attend during school holidays. In Sydney I met some of the most talented artists and creatives alike. A lot of who I am today I brought back home with me to Echuca, which is where I reside now. I started writing when I was 17, after I returned home from Sydney. The first song I ever wrote was at my grandmothers piano with my Mum and Minma (grandmother) by my side. The song is tucked away in my journal titled “Seventeen”.

Which musicians/people of the industry have you learned the most from?
I know I am not alone when I say this, but the queen Lana Del Rey has heavily impacted my song writing. She breaks boundaries and writes from the soul. Something I continue to keep in mind when that pen hits the paper. With my debut single, my producer Benjamin McCarthy has guided me and answered my millions of questions.
What do you love about the Murray River life?
There is nothing quite like Murray River life.. the peace and quiet, small commutes.. It makes it easier that I live on a farm, but I would take tree’s and masses of land over a concrete jungle any day.
What were the first few tune(s) you learned ?
I grew up singing what mum and dad loved. ABBA, Queen, Gwen Stefani, Shania Twain, INXS, ACDC, Fleetwood Mac. The first tune I could play on piano was 100% Mary had a little lamb. (lol) Although as I got older I would come home from school and YouTube ‘Christina Aguilera instrumentals’ and try, TRY to sing like her, Haha. Sorry neighbours.
What has been the coolest venue you performed in?
I have performed in many groovy places! But I would have to say when I was in LA and a group of my friends and I sung inside fast food restaurant, in-and-out. Does that class as a venue? It was very much a glee moment.
Favourite Cover that the band like to perform?
(Currently Re Branding Walking South this week stay tuned for a new name)
We love a little bit of Fleetwood Mac. Mark and I will have different favourites but MY fave as a duo is Drift Away – Dobie Gray.
And what are the plans for the future? Ie: recording, touring abroad?, Festivals?, Joint projects?
I plan to have a song out in the next few months as a follow up to, Little Girl. I would love to do a stripped back version of Little Girl as well. Honestly right now I am just trying to stay present and focus on one project.. I tend to get a little ahead of my self haha. But lets say yes to all the above! One day.
Who are your favourite artists currently on the Oz scene & your local scene?
I love a little bit of Vera Blue, Matt Corby and Angus & Julia Stone.
Here in Echuca – Moama we are so lucky to have such a huge variety of talent. Everyone is amazing. Something I do love is watching the young talent emerge, it takes me back!
Which other artists should we look out for on the local scene & across Australia?
A good friend of mine L E X just released her debut single Cest La Vie. I’m constantly messaging her like, “Did I do this right” “How do I do this”. I love to support all the musicians I meet. I have just made a spotify playlist called Friends of DREU.X … share the love
