Murray River region Ballooning at it’s Finest !!!

There is a quiet, almost sacred magic to winter mornings along the Murray River. The mist sits low on the water, the air is crisp and sharp, and the Sunraysia landscape slowly wakes up under a pale golden light. But this July, if you look up from the riverbanks, that serene winter canvas is about to be transformed into a kaleidoscope of brilliant colour.

Balloons over Mildura 2026 is officially back, and it’s reminding us exactly why the Mallee region holds such a legendary chapter in Australia’s aviation history.

Running from July 4th to 12th (with commercial passenger flights kicking off early on June 27th), this nine-day spectacular will see over 30 hot air balloons take to Mildura’s famously expansive skies & Murray River. For locals and visitors alike, it is a visual feast that breathes vibrant warmth into the heart of winter.

A Masterclass in the Sky

This isn’t just a leisurely drift through the clouds; it’s a high-stakes arena. This year’s festival proudly hosts Round Two of the Australian Balloon Federation Hot Air Balloon Grand Prix. Elite pilots from across the nation are converging on the Murray to sharpen their skills and undergo rigorous training ahead of the 2026 World Hot Air Balloon Championships in Poland.

Spectators tracking the flight paths from the ground will get to witness the nail-biting precision of these pilots during competitive tasks. Keep your eyes peeled on the morning of Saturday, July 11th, for the fan-favourite Key Grab competition, where pilots must navigate the invisible rivers of the wind to quite literally grab a key atop a pole.

Grounded in Community: The Night Glow

While the dawn and late afternoon launches offer a peaceful, ethereal experience, the festival’s beating heart shifts to the ground on Saturday, July 4th for the iconic Night Glow.

Held at the Mildura Recreation Reserve, the family-friendly evening brings the magic of ballooning down to earth. As dusk settles, massive nylon envelopes will inflate and stand tall like glowing giants. Synchronized to a powerful musical soundtrack, the 30-minute night illumination is nothing short of breathtaking. Paired with local food vendors, live music, and children’s games, it highlights the rich community spirit that defines the Murray region.

Event Note: The Night Glow is a ticketed, alcohol-free event, and early bird tickets are drawn into an exclusive competition to step onto the field with the pilots.

The Ultimate River Perspective

The hub for the event’s flight operations is the newly revitalised Powerhouse Precinct along the Mildura riverfront. It’s here that the true spirit of the Murray ties into the festival. Passengers taking to the skies with Global Ballooning Australia will start their journey by meeting their crews, watching the dramatic roar of the burners, and stepping into the basket just as the sun cracks the horizon.

From 2,000 feet up, the view is unparalleled. The winding, majestic ribbon of the Murray River carves its way through patchworks of lush vineyards, citrus orchards, and red earth plains. It’s a perspective of our region that few get to experience, offering calm-air winter flying conditions that balloonists dream of.

Whether you are chasing the fleet with a camera from the banks of the river, enjoying a local Shiraz while watching the afternoon shapes drift by, or standing amongst the roaring burners themselves, Balloons over Mildura is a brilliant reminder of the magic that happens when our community looks up together. The big skies are waiting. Will you be watching from the ground, or soaring among them?
